How to edit a PDF — the essentials

Updated:

Most PDF tasks can be done right in your browser without a subscription: change and add text with the PDF editor, fill forms with Fill PDF, sign with Sign PDF and remove confidential details with Redact PDF.

Change text

In the PDF editor, click a line or paragraph and type. Font, size, color and alignment are applied; paragraphs re-wrap automatically. On save, the old text is removed from the file. More: Change text in a PDF.

Add text, images and markup

The toolbar adds text boxes, images, freehand drawings, shapes and highlights. Existing images can be moved, resized or deleted.

Fill in forms

Fillable fields are highlighted in Fill PDF. For forms without fields, just type on the lines with “Add text”. More: Fill out a PDF form.

Sign

Draw, type or upload a photo of your signature in Sign PDF. More: Sign a PDF without printing.

Redact

Redact PDF permanently removes names, account numbers and other details — including “Search & redact” for every occurrence. More: Redact a bank statement.

Scanned PDFs

Scans are images. To click, search or copy text, run OCR first.

What a browser editor can’t do — and the alternatives

  • Keep the exact original font: changed text uses a similar standard font. For logos or special fonts, edit the source document and export again.
  • Rebuild the whole layout: for big changes, PDF to Word is often faster — then save as PDF again.
  • Qualified electronic signatures: these require a certified trust service provider; an inserted signature is a simple electronic signature.
