Password-protect a PDF

Upload the PDF, set a strong password and download the encrypted file. Without the password it can no longer be opened. Encryption uses AES-256 and happens on your device — the password is never transmitted.

Your files never leave your device — everything runs locally in your browser.

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose a PDF

The file you want to protect.

  2. 2

    Set a password

Enter it twice; the strength meter helps you choose.

  3. 3

    Set permissions

Optionally block printing, copying or editing.

  4. 4

    Encrypt

    Download the protected file.

When a password makes sense

Emails aren’t always encrypted in transit and can end up in the wrong inbox. For documents with health data, salaries, ID copies or customer data, a password is a simple extra barrier.

Choosing a good password

  • At least 12 characters — a passphrase of several words is easy to remember and hard to guess.
  • No obvious data such as birthdays or names.
  • A separate password for each group of recipients.

Sharing the password safely

Never send the password in the same email as the file. Use a text message, a messenger or a phone call instead, so the document stays protected even if the email is intercepted.

A forgotten password can’t be recovered. Keep an unprotected original in a safe place.

Tips

  • Share the password through a different channel than the file, e.g. by text message.
  • A forgotten password can’t be recovered — store it safely.
  • Permission restrictions without an open password offer only weak protection.

Frequently asked questions

How secure is AES-256?

It’s the strongest encryption defined in the PDF standard. A sufficiently long password is what matters most.

Can the recipient open the PDF on any device?

Yes, all common PDF readers and browsers support password-protected PDFs.

What do print and copy restrictions do?

Most programs respect them, but without an open password they’re easy to bypass. For real confidentiality, always set an open password.
